On May 19, 2013, the Mediation Act came into force in Portugal. Portugal has thus transposed Directive 2008/52/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 21 May 2008 on certain aspects of mediation in civil and commercial matters into national law. This will further promote out-of-court conflict resolution in cross-border legal transactions in Europe. This will further strengthen Europe as a legal and business location in international comparison.

Portugal introduced a new mediation law on May 19, 2013, thereby transposing EU Directive 2008/52/EC into national law.
